Temple Activities in August

Sri Varalakshmi Vratham:

Aug 20th (Friday) 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Varalakshmi Puja is observed by married women in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and other parts of South India. Goddess Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth and prosperity – is worshipped on this day. Varamahalakshmi literally means the boon granting goddess.

The Friday before the Full Moon, or Pournami day, of Tamil Month Aadi is chosen to perform Varalakshmi Puja. The corresponding month in the Kannada, Marathi and Telugu Calendar is the Shravan month.

Worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on Varalakshmi Vrata day is equivalent to worshipping Ashtalaksmi – the eight goddesses of Wealth, Earth, Learning, Love, Fame, Peace, Pleasure, and Strength.

Administrative Matters

Food Sponsorship:

As we have informed you over the past couple of months, there has been a drop in revenue from hundi and pooja collections over the last year. This has forced us to dip into reserves to the tune of $7,000 every month.

The Board of Trustees and Executive Committee have approved a new food sponsorship program at the Temple. In summary, Temple will request a donation of $3 for lunches on Sunday and $5 for lunch/dinner during major events. Food preparation will be rotated among different groups and vendors (restaurants) willing to participate in the program. We are targeting to have 52 sponsors for every Sunday in 2011. We request that you support this new initiative to increase revenue for the Temple.

Please click here for Food Sponsorship - Procedures.

Youth Team:

The Executive Committee is looking for Middle and High School children to come forward to join the Hindu Society of Nevada - Youth Team. This will provide an excellent opportunity for children to develop their organizational and leadership skills. Please contact Saroj Chatterjee at 837-0738 if interested in volunteering. Duties and responsibilities will include - collecting email and address information from Devotees, organizing childrens activities at the Temple (dance programs, rangoli competition), assist the Executive committee during major festivals at the Temple.

Thank You,

Temple Administration
